The role

As part of the QFAB team, we are seeking a biostatistician able to work at the interface of molecular biology, health and statistics. The role offers an outstanding opportunity to work with leading clinicians and scientists and contribute to cutting-edge research projects in the biological, environmental and medical sciences.

The types of analysis include but are not limited to:

  • Exploratory statistical analysis and data mining
  • Statistical consulting for clinicians and researchers for basic and high-level aspects of their research
  • Clinical trial design and analysis
  • Experimental design
  • Multi-omics integration
  • Analysis of highly dimensional biological data

The role involves identifying and gathering analysis requirements from a wide range of life science and clinical researchers and delivering efficient statistical solutions to meet their research outcomes.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide expertise in the design and analysis of biological and clinical projects.
  • Perform analysis of high-throughput omics datasets, including multi-omics analysis.
  • Consult with researchers to understand their research questions and provide necessary biostatistics support required to meet their research goals.
  • Ensure delivery of quality outcomes on time and within budget.
  • Deliver training workshops.
  • Where appropriate, report research results to the scientific community via reports, posters, papers and presentations.

In addition, at level HEW 7:

  • Gather project requirements from researchers, developing with them new proposals and project plans.
  • Manage projects.
  • Design, organise, schedule and manage training programs.
  • Engage potential new researcher partners and represent the organisation during conferences or seminars.
  • Where appropriate, supervise or share supervision of other staff, interns and/or students in relevant projects.

Organisational Environment

QFAB is a leading bioinformatics facility with a commitment to helping life science and health researchers unlock the full value of their research data. Working closely with researchers, the QFAB team members apply data management, integration, analysis and visualisation techniques to maximise the potential value of large-scale biological and clinical datasets. QFAB is the consulting branch of QCIF, a not-for-profit public company, whose members are seven Queensland-based universities. This position will be hosted by the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at The University of Queensland.

Remuneration

This is a full-time or part-time, fixed term appointment for 12 months at HEW Level 6 or 7. Appointment level will be dependent on qualifications, skills and experience.

The remuneration package at HEW6 will be in the range $75,957 - $81,714 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $97,851 - $106,879 p.a.)

The remuneration package at HEW7 will be in the range $83,633 - $91,350 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $107,041 - $116,917).

Requirements

Applicants should have expertise in biostatistics applied to clinical research and high-throughput omics studies. In addition to scientific excellence, applicants will have proven success in working with biologists and clinicians. The applicant will demonstrate a high level of personal motivation and initiative with a strong ability to work as part of a team. A high degree of autonomy and professionalism is required to represent QFAB on partners’ premises. Applicants should possess a Masters or PhD degree in statistics or closely related quantitative discipline with at least 3 years of experience in providing statistical expertise in life sciences and medical research.
