The Role
Under limited direction you will manage the establishment, enhancement and delivery of research data management capabilities by combining expert knowledge of the research data lifecycle and partnership with research teams. In this role you will support the development of DSTG’s data centric culture and the uplift and adoption of data governance initiatives within Defence. Your role is to support researchers within DSTG to enable research data management and includes provision of advice, the development and delivery of training and support of the organisation’s research data management objectives.
This position is broad-banded across two levels S&T3 and S&T4. Applicants must clearly specify in their application which position/s you are applying for.
Duties (S&T3):
• Provide guidance, support and recommendations on research data management tools and practices including research data management plans, metadata creation, compliance with security policy, data archiving, data sharing, data re-use, data citation and data preservation in accordance with Defence Science and Technology Groups research context.
• Develops expertise and gives advice to research teams to improve data management planning, understanding and selection of data management tools and practices, data archiving and data sharing options including licencing and data citation.
• Liaises and collaborates with stakeholders and partners to apply solutions to meet research data management needs and identifies those that may be re-used across common research methodologies.
• Develops and maintains specialist knowledge of trends and issues in research data management and uses this to drive innovation in local practice.
• Develop expert understanding of legislative, policy and procedural frameworks related to research data management and uses this to ensure research data management capabilities align with and support researcher compliance.
• Leads development of procedures, support materials and learning objects to support good research data management practice.
• Resolves routine research data management problems, including those related to research data management plans, metadata creation, compliance with security policy and data sharing.
Additional duties (S&T4):
• Applies expertise and gives advice to research teams to improve data management planning, understanding and selection of data management tools and practices, data archiving and data sharing options including licencing and data citation.
• Apply industry standards and adapt best practice to develop novel solutions for Research Data Management.
• Maintains an expert understanding of legislative, policy and procedural frameworks related to research data management and uses this to ensure research data management capabilities align with and support researcher compliance.
About our Team
The Research Data and Information (RDI) directorate supports DSTG by managing DSTG research data and information as a strategic asset, enabling it to be discoverable, reproducible and reusable.
Importantly, RDI aims to provide services aligned with Defence’s S&T research and development needs, working collaboratively with researchers and using technology to enable these services.
Our Ideal Candidate
Research Data and Information are seeking an experienced professional with degree qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in the relevant area of Research Data Management and/or Data Governance. You will have excellent communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills which will enable you to thrive a complex and busy environment. Experienced in handling competing priorities, working with some ambiguity and writing clearly and concisely for different audiences, you’ll enjoy the challenge of working in this space.
Skills and capability requirements of the role (S&T3):
• Knowledge of Research Data Management (R DM)in a research environment.
• Demonstrated experience in working with research community in a support role.
• Experience with planning, delivering and evaluating user-centred online training sessions to both groups and individuals.
• Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement, including promotion of research support services.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
In addition, for appointment at S&T4 level:
• Demonstrated experience in supporting RDM in a research intensive institution.
• Application of expertise to provide high-level, strategic advice.
