Description

Biostatistician (Research) – Fixed term – Part Time

 Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and experienced Biostatistician to join the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Austin Health, Heidelberg, Melbourne. This service also supports the Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre (BAROC). The Department of Radiation Oncology provides a full range of radiation treatment modalities and techniques to service the diverse needs of the cancer patients.

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Austin Health has been established as the state-wide MR Linear Accelerator service for Victorian patients. This new service includes an MR simulator and MR Linear Accelerator (MR-Linac) both of which are first in Victoria. In addition, the department is equipped with three linear accelerators with high energy electrons capacity, one superficial and orthovoltage treatment machine and HDR brachytherapy. The treatment service is supported by CT and MR simulator and 3D planning system. Currently, it provides services to 1300 patients per year from the north-east region and country Victoria. The department provides a streamline service for veteran patients across the State of Victoria. The department has an active research unit supporting translational and clinical trials, and research higher degree students.

The Biostatistician will provide advice, support and direction to clinical staff on study design, database management, statistical analysis and review in translating research into practice. This position will support and assist allied health, nursing, medical, medical physics and radiation therapy staff in the Department of Radiation Oncology to develop research protocols, participate and/or lead in competitive funding applications, analysis of results and prepare presentations and publications. Furthermore, the successful candidate will partake and assist in the development of research collaborations that enhance the capacity of the Department of Radiation Oncology to participate in research initiatives.

Requirements

Role Specific:

  • Provide advice on study design and conduct
  • Develop statistical analysis plan (SAP)
  • Power and sample size calculations
  • Protocol preparation, review and assessment
  • Database design and management
  • Provide biostatistical data analysis
  • Provide statistical section of presentations and manuscripts
  • Provide statistical advice and section for competitive funding applications
  • Communicate statistical findings effectively with non-statisticians
  • Develop collaborative research networks
  • Assist clinicians in disseminating their research findings
  • Contribute to the academic profile of the Radiation Oncology

Teaching, Education & Research

  • Maintain a knowledge of up-to-date advances in Radiation Oncology through ongoing education
  • Participate in, and foster, quality research activities within the Department, Cancer Services and Austin Health

Administrative

  • Assist and manage appropriate documentation related to clinical research projects
  • Ensure all records and notes are completed in a timely manner

Quality Assurance

  • Participate in the comprehensive Quality Assurance Program in Radiation Oncology.
  • Participate and ensure Quality Assurance Procedures are carried out with Radiation Oncology clinical research project.

Essential Knowledge and skills:

  • A commitment to Austin Health values: Integrity, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.
  • Competency and sound understanding in Biostatistical Analysis
  • Statistical qualification
  • Experience in a clinical research environment (clinical trials, cohort studies, health service research, systematic reviews)
  • Track record in biostatistics
  • Strong knowledge and experience with major statistical software package (such as R, SAS, STATA or SPSS or another academically acceptable statistical package)
  • Knowledge and experience in database design and management
  • Demonstrated ability in preparation of research grant (such as statistical analysis plans, study protocols and grant applications)
  • Knowledge of guidelines for ethical conduct of research studies involving human subjects
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise and collaborate with technical and clinical teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organizational and adaptability skills

Desirable but not essential:

  • Ability to develop new statistical methodology such as adaptive trial design and complex longitudinal observational studies analysis
  • A sound understanding of information technology including clinical systems, applications relevant to the risk management reporting or as required for the role and/or department.
  • IT competency
  • Knowledge of Radiation Oncology
