He angitūtanga: About the Role

The Principal Science Analyst/Statistician, plays a lead role in DOC and is responsible for the design, statistical analysis and thought leadership for organisational-wide statistical design, analysis, and training.

In this role you will lead on complex scientific statistical analysis, which underpins and drives our biodiversity strategic approach.  You will apply your knowledge and skills to address novel statistical and conservation problems and work alongside science funders and providers to influence a planned strategy and approach.

The position will be focused on:

  • The development and implementation of organisational-wide monitoring programmes including planning, training, data and information management and quality control and assurance processes.
  • Leading statistics and science input to focus thinking on conservation issues
  • Analysing a variety of data including biodiversity data end observational data


Requirements

He kōrero mōu: What we are looking for:

You will be a highly motivated, engaging, and influential leader, someone who can help DOC create a paradigm shift in our research priorities and programme delivery. Taking a lead role in the department’s statistical work from within the Design and Evaluation team, you will provide subject matter expertise and support the uplift of research and statistical analysis capability maturity across the organisation.

Taking a systems-wide approach, you will scan both national and international trends to identify where statistics and science can weave together to inform more meaningful conservation research and analysis.

You will be highly sought after in your field and recognised at a national or international level within a science speciality and have published papers to evidence your design and analysis of data, ideally in biodiversity.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • PhD or Masters level qualification in statistics or equivalent
  • Ten or more years of experience applying statistics
  • Peer reviewed publications
  • Experience in the design and management of research investigations
  • Statistical programming experience (preferably R)
  • Written and oral communications skills, including the ability to convey complex statistical concepts to a wide audience.
  • Experience with observational study design and analysis
  • A willingness to learn, understand and apply Te Ao Māori approaches and tikanga
  • Strong team player with clear and engaging communication skills

Desirable qualifications/ experience:

  • Reproducible research methods using RMarkdown, Shiny or LaTeX
  • Teaching or mentoring experience in a academic or professional environment
  • Experience with social and/or ecological studies
